I decided it was time to follow in the footsteps of my photographer father and succumb to my natural ‘God Given’ ability to take photos by registering for a Color Photography class this semester. As my last semester on campus I figured I would go out with a bang, showcase my mad PicNik skills, and take a class that I knew would be easy to someone coming from a lineage of well bred photographers. Waltzing into my class today ready to learn all about my dad’s fancy camera that he so kindly has allowed me to use, I fell flat on my face. Not literally…that would be embarrassing. Figuratively of course.
Who knows what an F-stop is? And did you know that it’s the same thing as aperture? How about shutter speeds, depth of field, and the ‘Sunny 16 Rule’ (which I presumed was a 16th birthday party in a sunny location for us cold North Dakota folk to bring their screaming girls to a sunny destination…Wrong-oh)?
Photography is complicated! It’s a series of mathematical equations, getting just the right amount of light, and artistic ability that my ‘Food Setting’ just doesn’t capture like some of these amazing local artists can….
Here is a shot from Lance Thorn whose photography will be available at the North Dakota Museum of Art’s winter aution!
Another great artist that photographed the 2010 Art Fest in Grand Forks is Shawna Noel
And last this stunning photograph from Caylan Van Larson taken in Madison, WI
I have a lot to learn from Grand Fork’s many talented photographers, and when I do my photography chops will hopefully begin to show. Who knows, maybe I’ll enter a photo in something like the “Northern Exposure” Photography Contest being put on by the East Grand Forks Campbell Library! Entries need to be submitted by February 10, 2011 and the opening ceremony will take place February 28 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm with all work on display until April 2! What a great chance to see photographer’s work and to showcase your own. Culture Pulse.org was the resource for my information and it’s there for all the best in arts and cultures events in North Dakota!
