The Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre will be performing The Wizard of Oz during the weekend of February 18th-20th and 24th-27th at Empire Arts Theatre. Now I don’t want to give to much away about the play, but I will tell you there is a tornado, some very handsome little people that prefer lollipops over the generic brand candy, and one witch that gets a little green with envy. My favorite character of the film version would go to Glinda the Good Witch. No matter who is in the inevitable re-make of this film, I will always be a big supporter of the way actress Billie Burke floated onto the screen… literally.
If your looking to something a little more action packed but still containing princess dresses, the first ever roller derby event will be held this Saturday at the Alerus Center between the Sugarbeaters and the Deadwood Regulators at 6:30PM. The theme for the ’bout’, as they are called, is A Bout to Remember. The teams will be dressing as Carrie’s vs. Prom Queens, and taking gently used dress donations for UND’s Non-Profit Leadership Student Association and their Prom Dress Sale being held next weekend at the Hughes Fine Arts Center.
The Forx Roller Derby league was created by a group of women who wanted to play roller derby, but did not have a league close enough. They decided that they would take matters into their own hands and sent out the roller derby signal round Grand Forks. That was in May 2010. Now there are over 30 women playing and participating in roller derby in the Grand Forks area!
What’s my favorite thing about the roller derby girls…their cool names! Members of the Sugarbeaters team include the likes of Pepper Razzi, Ivana Smackachik, and Jackie Ossassin. What would your roller derby name be? I think if I was forced to choose I would definitely go with my idol and be called… Lucille Brawl!
