I couldn’t tell you who get’s the better end of the deal on Mother’s day. Moms get funny cards with sweet, love-filled messages and fabulous gifts; while their kids are blessed with a personal cheerleader, janitor, psychiatrist, sous chef, executive assistant, chauffeur, etc….all rolled into one snuggly person they can call Mom.
How do you thank a person that has given up countless hours of sleep and a good portion of their sanity just to ensure your own happiness?
Once you get your mom’s attention, head out for the day and head to the North Dakota Museum of Art’s Antique to Chic jewelry sale. This annual event is in its 6th year, and will be held on Sunday, May 8th from 3-5pm. Browse through their beautiful collection of unique costume and vintage jewelry, accessories, and more. Every mom has that special piece of jewelry that you wear around the house when she isn’t looking. Now you have the opportunity to find a piece of your own with your personal shopper by your side! This event is free (love) and you have the option to purchase a $5 raffle ticket with all proceeds benefiting children’s educational programs at the museum.
I love taking my mom shopping, to the theatre, concerts, and doing things with her that she’ll enjoy. She raised my two sisters and I to be passionate about arts and culture, but also to become “well-rounded†individuals. This meant we often had to do “boy stuff†with our dad. I’ve always figured from the many looks of disdain he would give me that I am not the best fisherwoman, hunter, farmer, or sports superstar. I have to agree with him here. What we do have in common is our navigation skills. He can work a compass and my google-maps proficiency is fabulous.
If you’ve got the prowess to whip our your compass and go on an adventure, check out the Dewey Kvidt Duathlon on Sunday, May 8th in Turtle River Park. Just 30 minutes west of Grand Forks, this 4-6 hour race is designed to be an introduction to adventure racing. It involves hiking, biking, navigation, teamwork, and mystery challenges in and around the park!
Whether you are looking to take your mom shopping, on an outdoor adventure, or just to a nice dinner and a movie, remember to take a moment to tell her how much you appreciate what’s she’s done for you.
